Подгуже. Екскурсія вулицями краківського гетто (UA)

30.06.2024 - 13:00 / Start: Podgórski Square, in front of St. Joseph's Church.

In March 1941, the life of Kraków’s Jews changed dramatically for ever: they had to leave their homes and move to the newly established ghetto. The ghetto was located in Podgórze and was separated from the rest of Kraków by the river Wisła, Lasota Hill and the wall. It occupied 15 streets with 320 houses.

During the tour, we will see the houses where key organizations and institutions in the ghetto operated, and we will also learn about the life of its inhabitants. We will visit Plac Bohaterów Getta (The Ghetto Heroes Square) with a monument in the form of 70 chairs.

We will learn the history of the “Pharmacy under the Eagle”, which was the venue for cultural meetings of the ghetto elite and intellectual discussions accompanied by the music played by Rosner Players Quartet. The owner of the pharmacy, Tadeusz Pankiewicz, was the only  Pole who lived in the ghetto and described the events that took place there day after day.

The Kraków ghetto ceased to exist in March 1943. The memory of its inhabitants lives on.
