An Englishman in Kazimierz. A meeting devoted to the memory of Chris Schwarz (PL/EN)

27.06.2024 - 15:00 / Galicia Jewish Museum, ul. Dajwór 18

Chris Schwarz was a British photographer and the founder and first director of the Galicia Jewish Museum. Beginning in the early 1990s, he came to Poland to photograph traces of Jewish heritage, signs of interest in Jewish culture and the rebirth of Jewish life in the country several decades after the Holocaust. The photographs he took during these visits later became “Traces of Memory”, the core of the permanent exhibition of the museum he founded exactly 20 years ago.

Even though Chris Schwarz tragically died of a grave illness in 2007, his memory still lives in Krakow: it is a story of a charismatic red-headed Englishman, a sensitive and stubborn visionary who left an indelible mark on the district of Kazimierz.

During the meeting devoted to his memory, we will hear the story of Chris Schwarz and the beginnings of the Galicia Jewish Museum from his friends and coworkers.
