From Alef to Tav – the mystical meaning of the 22 letters of Hebrew alphabet (PL)
23.06.2024 - 11:00 / High Synagogue (1st floor), ul. Józefa 38The letters of the Hebrew alphabet have a sacred status, they are perceived as spiritual powers derived from the Power of God. These heavenly letters are written in the Torah, which existed in God’s plan before the Creation of the world. The world was created using the letters of the Hebrew alphabet – God looked into them and arranged them in countless combinations.
“These are the 22 letters with which the Torah was given to the tribes of Israel, and they were inscribed in a fiery pen upon the awesome and terrific crown of the Holy Blessed One, at the time when He decided to create the world; they appeared before the Holy Blessed One, and each of them begged Him: use me to create the world!” (Midrash Yalkut Shimoni, Bereshit 1). The Midrash then describes God’s discussion with the letters, in which it is revealed what the function and nature of each letter is, and with which words and phenomena a given letter will be connected. God’s intimacy with the Hebrew letters is also metaphorically shown in the following Talmudic story, “At the time that Moshe went up on high to the heavens, he found the Holy One sitting, affixing crowns to the letters of the Torah.” (BT, Menachot 29b). This was an indication to Moshe that there were hidden meanings in the letters of the Torah that would only be revealed in future generations
