Faced with the possibility of Israel’s complete destruction, Prime Minister Golda Meir must navigate overwhelming odds with millions of lives hanging in the balance during the tense 19 days of the Yom Kippur War in 1973. On 6 October 1973, under cover of darkness, on Israel’s holiest day and during the month of Ramadan, the combined forces of Egypt, Syria and Jordan launched a surprise attack on the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights. Surrounded, isolated and frustrated by the infighting of her all-male cabinet, Israel’s only female Prime Minister Golda Meir is in a race against time to save millions of lives on both sides of the conflict. The “Iron Lady of Israel” confronts a grave illness, a skeptical cabinet and a complex relationship with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Directed by Guy Nattiv and starring Helen Mirren – both Academy Award winners – “Golda” had its world premiere at the 2023 Berlinale.
